Dryer Vent Cleaning Glossary:
Your Guide to Industry Terminology

90° Elbow: A bend in the dryer vent system with a 90-degree angle, used to navigate corners or change direction. Minimize the number of elbows as they restrict airflow.

Airflow: The movement of air through the dryer vent system. Optimal airflow is essential for efficient drying and preventing overheating.

Bird Nesting Tool: A specialized tool used to remove bird nests and debris from dryer vent systems.

Bird Nest Cover: A mesh screen placed over the dryer vent exit to prevent birds from building nests inside the system.

CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute): A unit of measurement used to quantify airflow. Higher CFM indicates better ventilation.

Clogged Dryer Vent: A dryer vent obstructed by lint, debris, or other materials, hindering airflow and creating safety hazards.

Crevice Tool: A narrow attachment used with dryer vent cleaning tools to access tight spaces and remove stubborn debris.

Digital Anemometer: A handheld device used to measure airflow through the dryer vent system. This helps technicians assess the effectiveness of the cleaning process.

Dryer Lint Trap: A device installed within the dryer to capture lint before it enters the dryer vent system. Regular cleaning of the lint trap is crucial.

Dryer Lint Trap Screen: A mesh screen located inside the dryer that captures lint before it enters the dryer vent system. Regular cleaning of the lint trap is crucial.

Dryer Vent Cleaning: The process of removing lint, debris, and other buildup from the dryer vent system to ensure optimal performance and safety.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Kit: A set of tools specifically designed for dryer vent cleaning, often including a brush, rod, and accessories.

Dryer Vent Cover: A decorative or protective cover placed over the dryer vent exit.

Dryer Vent Elbow: A bend in the dryer vent system used to navigate corners or change direction.

Minimize the number of elbows as they restrict airflow.

Dryer Vent Exit: The point where the dryer vent system terminates outside the house, expelling exhaust air. Ensure the vent exit is unobstructed by landscaping, debris, or snow.

Dryer Vent Length Equivalent (DVLE): A measurement system used to calculate the effective length of a dryer vent system, considering straight duct sections and elbows. Aim for a DVLE of 25 feet or less for optimal performance.

Dryer Vent Periscope: A specialized camera tool used to inspect the interior of dryer vent systems for blockages or damage.

Dryer Vent Screen: A metal mesh screen placed over the dryer vent exit to prevent birds, rodents, and debris from entering the system.

Dryer Vent Transition Tube: The flexible hose connecting the dryer to the dryer vent system. This should be made of metal or semi-rigid material and avoid excessive length or bends.

Duct Termination: The point where a dryer vent duct connects to another component, such as the exhaust vent or wall.

Exhaust Duct: The ductwork that carries dryer exhaust air from the dryer to the outside vent.

Exhaust Duct Joints: The connections between sections of exhaust ductwork.

Flex Hose: A flexible hose used in some dryer vent systems. Ensure proper installation and avoid excessive length or bends.

Foil Tape: A type of tape sometimes used to seal dryer vent connections. It is not recommended due to its susceptibility to damage and potential fire hazards.

Heartland Dryer Vent Cover: A specific brand of dryer vent cover.

Home Inspector: A professional who inspects homes for potential safety hazards, including clogged dryer vents.

International Residential Code (IRC): A building code that sets standards for dryer vent installations, including proper materials and clearances.

Rotary Brush: A common tool used for dryer vent cleaning. It consists of a rotating brush attached to a flexible rod, effectively removing lint and debris from the vent system.

Spring Tension Clamps: A type of clamp used to secure dryer vent components.

Telescoping Dryer Vent: A type of dryer vent system that can be extended or retracted for easier cleaning.

3-motor HEPA Filtered Vacuum System: A powerful vacuum system used in professional dryer vent cleaning to remove dust and debris effectively.

Vent Clamps: Metal bands used to secure dryer vent components, ensuring proper connections and preventing leaks.

Wall Termination: The point where a dryer vent duct terminates within a wall before exiting the house.

Water Vapor: Moisture released by the dryer during the drying process. A properly functioning dryer vent system should expel water vapor efficiently.

Worm Gear Clamps: A type of clamp used to secure dryer vent components, offering a more secure connection than spring tension clamps.

"Y" Adaptor: A fitting that allows two dryer vent ducts to connect into a single duct
